The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, established on July 1, 2022 integrates subjects relating to the Culture, Sports and Tourism sectors of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It is hoped that the synergy so generated would more effectively promote the long term development of the Culture, Sports, Tourism sectors and Creative Industries. The ultimate aim is to consolidate Hong Kong’s status as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange as specified in the National 14th Five-Year Plan; to showcase the rich heritage of the Chinese culture, the soft power of our country, and to tell the China story and Hong Kong story well.
Indeed, Hong Kong has always been a place where East meets West for arts and culture. This unique feature of ours is an attraction to many tourists, earning Hong Kong the world-renowned title Pearl of the Orient. Hong Kong has been hosting significant large-scale cultural and sports events in recent years, not only have they brought joy to our citizens, but also made a name for ourselves as an events capital. Hong Kong athletes take part in international sports events in the name of Hong Kong, China, their urge for excellence made them our pride of all time. Meanwhile, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has been collaborating with world-class museums across the globe to offer a variety of exhibitions, and it also invites prominent artists from the Mainland and Overseas to perform in Hong Kong. With diversified and colourful cultural and arts brands and projects such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, blooming arts groups of various scales, and the opening of large-scale facilities at the West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong is gifted the perfect opportunity to position as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.
Arts and culture nourish our soul and ignite inspiration, sports and recreation build up physique and foster solidarity, while tourism broadens horizons and strengthens interpersonal bonds. The trio may look different, but they are subtly connected. The chemistry of culture and tourism is obvious, mega sports events could also be mega events for tourists, while many sports events also carry a strong artistic sense. Last but not least, the creative industry interacts, complements and generates sparks with the three domains mentioned above.
Nurturing talents is equally essential to the development of culture, sports and tourism, all of them need the support of a broad mass base. Efforts must be devoted to audience building, increase of supporters and participants. With enthusiasm and an open mind, we shall stay in touch with stakeholders, members of the public, and organisations in the culture, sports and tourism sectors in our country and overseas, we shall strive ahead with perseverance.
